Overview

A malicious SVG file can cause an integer overflow in Qt's VectorImage QML type, leading to a null-pointer dereference. This flaw exists in Qt Quick components that render SVG graphics. It allows attackers to potentially crash or destabilize applications that load untrusted SVG content.

Description

A malicious SVG can trigger an integer overflow which in turn triggers a null-pointer dereference in VectorImage QML Type.

Impact

The vulnerability can lead to denial of service by crashing the application, compromising availability. It does not directly expose data or allow remote code execution, but it can be leveraged in a broader attack chain. Defenders should treat it as a high-impact issue for systems that render SVGs via Qt.

Remediation

Apply the latest Qt security update that patches the VectorImage integer overflow. If immediate patching is not possible, disable or sandbox SVG rendering, validate or sanitize SVG files before loading, and restrict file access to trusted sources.

Risk context

Severity is high with CVSS v3 of 7.5 and a low EPSS score of 0.00171, indicating a low probability of exploitation but significant impact if triggered. Defenders should prioritize patching but can also mitigate by restricting SVG usage.
