Overview
A flaw in GStreamer’s ASF demuxer allows an attacker to trigger a large heap allocation by manipulating the entry count in a Simple Index object. The resulting memory exhaustion can cause a denial of service on systems that process ASF, WMV, or WMA files. This affects any platform using the gst-plugins-ugly package for media playback.
Description
A flaw was found in the GStreamer ASF demuxer in gst-plugins-ugly. When parsing a Simple Index object, an attacker-controlled entry count is used to size a heap allocation without being limited to the payload available in the object. Processing a crafted ASF, WMV, or WMA file can cause a very large memory allocation request and lead to denial of service if the allocation fails or the process is memory-constrained.
Impact
The vulnerability leads to a denial of service by exhausting system memory, impacting availability of media services. Systems running GStreamer or applications that rely on it for playback are most at risk. The attack does not compromise confidentiality or integrity, but can disrupt user experience and service uptime.
Remediation
Upgrade GStreamer to a patched version that limits allocation size or removes the vulnerable code path. If an update is not immediately possible, configure sandboxing or memory limits for processes that invoke GStreamer, and disable ASF parsing in applications that do not require it. Monitor for unusually large ASF, WMV, or WMA files and reject or quarantine them.
Risk context
The CVSS score of 6.5 indicates a medium severity risk. While no EPSS data is available, the potential for a denial of service makes timely patching advisable.
