CVE-2026-98808
A buffer overflow in the Linux kernel's bcm_sysport_get_stats() function can corrupt memory when querying statistics on SYSTEMPORT Lite devi
Overview
A buffer overflow in the Linux kernel's bcm_sysport_get_stats() function can corrupt memory when querying statistics on SYSTEMPORT Lite devices. The flaw occurs because the code writes past the allocated ethtool buffer, potentially leading to crashes or privilege escalation. It affects Linux kernel users running Broadcom SYSTEMPORT Lite hardware.
Description
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: systemport: Fix buffer overflow in bcm_sysport_get_stats() When running on SYSTEMPORT Lite, certain statistics are unsupported and skipped during bcm_sysport_get_stats(). The variable 'j' tracks the compacted index into the destination data buffer, whereas 'i' iterates over all elements in bcm_sysport_gstrings_stats. Because the buffer allocated by ethtool is sized only according to bcm_sysport_get_sset_count(), storing values at data[i] instead of data[j] writes past the allocated array bounds, leading to memory corruption. Fix this by writing to data[j] instead of data[i].
Impact
The vulnerability can compromise integrity by allowing an attacker to overwrite kernel memory, potentially escalating privileges. Availability is also at risk, as memory corruption may crash network drivers or the entire system. Confidentiality is indirectly threatened if an attacker gains higher privileges to access sensitive data. Defenders of Linux systems with SYSTEMPORT Lite devices should be aware of the risk.
Remediation
Apply the kernel patch that corrects the index used in bcm_sysport_get_stats() (write to data[j] instead of data[i]). Upgrade to the latest stable kernel release that includes this fix. Verify that ethtool statistics calls are made against the correct buffer size. Monitor system logs for any memory corruption or driver crashes.
Risk context
The CVE has a high severity rating (CVSS 7.8) and no EPSS data is available, indicating a significant but not immediately imminent threat. Defenders should prioritize patching or upgrading kernel versions on affected systems.
