CVE-2026-98863

CVE-2026-98863 affects the Linux kernel's KVM hypervisor, where a failure to clear nested state page requests can lead to stale page mapping

Overview

CVE-2026-98863 affects the Linux kernel's KVM hypervisor, where a failure to clear nested state page requests can lead to stale page mappings when a vCPU is re-run. This flaw may allow a malicious guest to observe or influence memory used by the nested VM. It is relevant to systems running KVM on x86.

Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: KVM: x86: Re-pend GET_NESTED_STATE_PAGES if getting said pages fails Re-pend GET_NESTED_STATE_PAGES before exiting to userspace if getting the nested pages fails in the KVM_RUN path. If userspace re-runs the vCPU, and vmcs02 holds valid PFNs from the *previous* run of L2, then KVM could re-enter L2 with stale, unpinned PFNs mapped into e.g. the vAPIC page. Note, both SVM and VMX (as of commit 11722439fb20 ("KVM: nVMX: Ensure KVM_REQ_GET_NESTED_STATE_PAGES is cleared on VM-Exit") ensure the request is cleared on VM-Exit (including the "forced" case), i.e. there is no risk of double-mapping due to emulated VMLAUNCH/VMRESUME/VMRUN *and* the request trying to map the nested pages.

Impact

Confidentiality: potential leakage of nested VM memory; Integrity: possible corruption of nested VM state; Availability: risk of crash or denial of service. Defenders: administrators of Linux hosts running KVM, especially those running nested virtualization.

Remediation

Apply the latest kernel update that includes the commit fixing the GET_NESTED_STATE_PAGES re-queue bug. If patching is not immediately possible, disable nested virtualization (set kvm.nested=0) or ensure that the nested VM is not re-run without a full reset. Monitor for anomalous VM exits.

Risk context

The vulnerability has a medium severity score (CVSS 5.5) and no EPSS data, indicating a moderate risk that should be addressed promptly but is not an immediate critical threat.
