CVE-2026-61363: Remote Desktop Client Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
A critical RCE flaw in Windows Remote Desktop Client (CVE-2026-61363) allows attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted RDP traffic. All Windows 10/11 and Windows Server 2022 systems are affected. Apply the latest security update and enforce NLA or VPN to mitigate.
A remote code execution vulnerability was discovered in the Windows Remote Desktop Client, identified as CVE-2026-61363. The flaw can be triggered by an attacker sending specially crafted RDP packets to a target system, enabling arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the logged‑in user.
What happened
The vulnerability resides in the RDP protocol handling code within the Remote Desktop Client. An attacker can exploit it without authentication, provided the client is reachable over the network.
Impact
All Windows 10/11 and Windows Server 2022 installations that have not applied the latest cumulative update are vulnerable. Successful exploitation could lead to full system compromise, lateral movement, or persistence.
Mitigation
- Install the latest Windows security update that addresses CVE-2026-61363.
- Require Network Level Authentication (NLA) for all RDP sessions.
- Restrict RDP exposure to trusted networks or tunnel through a VPN.
- Apply least‑privilege principles and monitor for anomalous RDP activity.
Monitoring & Response
Watch for unusual RDP traffic patterns, failed authentication attempts, or unexpected process creation following RDP connections. Correlate logs with other security events to detect potential exploitation.
