Linux Kernel KSMBD Directory Query Race Condition Enables Remote Code Execution

A race condition in the Linux kernel’s KSMBD component allows unauthenticated attackers to execute arbitrary code. The flaw exists only on systems with KSMBD enabled and carries a CVSS score of 9.0. Linux has released a patch; administrators should update immediately.

A race condition in the handling of dir_fp objects within the Linux kernel’s KSMBD service permits remote code execution without authentication. Only hosts with KSMBD enabled are vulnerable.

Impact

Exploit grants kernel‑level privileges, enabling full system compromise. The CVSS score is 9.0 (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H).

Mitigation

Linux kernel maintainers have released a patch (commit be6d26bf27499977c746abc163659915082348d8). Apply the update to all affected kernels.

What to Do

  • Verify if KSMBD is enabled on your systems.
  • Apply the latest kernel update or backport the patch.
  • Disable KSMBD if not required.
  • Monitor for anomalous kernel activity and review audit logs.
