Overview

The Live Composer WordPress plugin prior to version 2.1.23 fails to sanitize custom post type slug settings, enabling stored XSS via front-end links. Admin users can inject malicious scripts even when unfiltered_html is disabled. This flaw can compromise site integrity and user data.

Description

The Live Composer WordPress plugin before 2.1.23 does not sanitise and escape some of its custom post type slug settings before using them in front-end links, which could allow high privilege users such as admin to perform Stored Cross-Site Scripting attacks even when the unfiltered_html capability is disallowed (for example in a multisite setup).

Impact

Stored XSS allows attackers to inject scripts that run in the context of site visitors, potentially stealing cookies or session tokens. This can lead to credential theft, defacement, or unauthorized actions on behalf of users. Site administrators are at risk when they manage the plugin, and all site visitors may be impacted.

Remediation

Update Live Composer to 2.1.23 or later. If an update is not possible, disable or remove custom post type slug settings, or sanitize them before output. Additionally, revoke unfiltered_html capability for non-admin users and run a site-wide XSS scan.

Risk context

Medium severity (CVSS 4.8) indicates a moderate risk; while not critical, it warrants timely patching to prevent potential XSS exploitation.
