Overview

The Post Snippets WordPress plugin (up to 4.2.4) fails to escape variable values in snippets, enabling Contributor-level users to inject arbitrary JavaScript that runs when content is viewed. This flaw allows attackers to execute malicious scripts in the context of site visitors. The vulnerability is a classic XSS flaw that can be exploited by anyone with Contributor or higher privileges.

Description

The Post Snippets WordPress plugin through 4.2.4 does not properly escape variable values substituted into snippets before outputting them, allowing users with the Contributor role and above to inject arbitrary web scripts that execute when the content is viewed.

Impact

Confidentiality: attackers can exfiltrate data from victim browsers. Integrity: injected scripts can modify page content or redirect users. Availability: not directly impacted. Defenders are primarily site administrators and users with Contributor or higher roles.

Remediation

Upgrade the Post Snippets plugin to version 4.2.5 or later where the issue is fixed. If an upgrade is not immediately possible, disable the plugin or restrict Contributor access, and apply a site-wide content sanitization filter to strip disallowed scripts from snippet outputs.

Risk context

Severity is listed as unknown and no CVSS or EPSS scores are available, indicating limited publicly available data on exploitability. Nonetheless, the flaw permits client-side code execution and should be addressed promptly to mitigate potential XSS attacks.
