Overview
IBM API Connect versions 10.0.8.0-10.0.8.12 and 12.1.0.0-12.1.1.2 allow a network-positioned attacker to intercept backup data because the backup server’s identity is not verified during the secure connection. This flaw can expose backup contents and any credentials stored within. The vulnerability is rated medium severity.
Description
IBM API Connect 10.0.8.0 through 10.0.8.12 and 12.1.0.0 through 12.1.1.2 could allow a network-positioned attacker to intercept backup data due to improper verification of the backup server's identity. The identity of the backup server is not verified when the secure connection for analytics backups is established, which could allow backup data, and credentials if used, to be intercepted.
Impact
Confidentiality: backup data and credentials may be exposed to an attacker. Integrity: backups could be tampered with if intercepted. Availability: not directly impacted. Defenders: administrators managing IBM API Connect backups and monitoring network traffic.
Remediation
Apply the latest IBM API Connect patches (10.0.8.13 or later, 12.1.1.3 or later). Verify that the backup server’s TLS certificate is validated and consider enforcing mutual TLS. Monitor for unusual traffic to backup endpoints and audit backup logs for unauthorized access.
Risk context
The CVE has a CVSS v3 score of 6.8, indicating a moderate risk. No EPSS data is available. While the threat is not urgent, patching should be prioritized to prevent potential data exposure.
