Overview
CVE-2026-20555 is an out‑of‑bounds read in modem firmware that can cause a remote denial of service when a user equipment (UE) connects to a rogue base station. The flaw requires no user interaction or elevated privileges and can be triggered by an attacker controlling the base station. Affected devices can become unresponsive, disrupting connectivity for users.
Description
In Modem, there is a possible out of bounds read due to a missing bounds check. This could lead to remote denial of service, if a UE has connected to a rogue base station controlled by the attacker, with no additional execution privileges needed. User interaction is not needed for exploitation. Patch ID: MOLY01876664; Issue ID: MSV-9834.
Impact
The vulnerability primarily impacts availability, potentially causing service outages for end users and network operators. It does not allow code execution or data disclosure, but it can be leveraged to disrupt network services. Defenders should consider the risk to service reliability and user experience.
Remediation
Apply the vendor patch identified as MOLY01876664 to all affected modem firmware versions. Verify firmware integrity and version compliance on both UE and base station equipment. Implement network monitoring to detect anomalous base station behavior and enforce authentication of base stations.
Risk context
The CVSS v3 score of 7.5 classifies this as high severity, indicating a significant risk to availability. No EPSS data is available, but the lack of user interaction and remote trigger underscores the need for timely patching.
