Overview

CVE-2026-20558 is a local privilege escalation vulnerability in the GPU pdma component caused by a use‑after‑free bug. It allows an attacker with local access to gain higher privileges on the affected system without additional execution privileges. The flaw exists in the Windows GPU driver and requires no user interaction.

Description

In GPU pdma, there is a possible escalation of privilege due to use after free. This could lead to local escalation of privilege with no additional execution privileges needed. User interaction is not needed for exploitation. Patch ID: ALPS11365070; Issue ID: MSV-9547.

Impact

The vulnerability can compromise confidentiality and integrity by allowing an attacker to execute code with elevated privileges on the local machine. It can also affect availability if the attacker modifies system settings or disables services. Administrators and local users are the primary impact group.

Remediation

Apply the official patch identified by ALPS11365070 and update the Windows operating system to the latest cumulative update. Verify that the GPU driver is updated to the patched version. If immediate patching is not possible, restrict local user privileges and monitor for anomalous GPU activity.

Risk context

Severity is high with a CVSS v3 score of 7.8, indicating a significant risk for local privilege escalation. Prompt patching is recommended to mitigate potential exploitation.
