CVE-2026-59127: Windows Installer Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability

A new elevation‑of‑privilege flaw in Windows Installer (CVE‑2026‑59127) can allow local attackers to gain SYSTEM rights by abusing MSI processing. The issue affects all recent Windows 10/11 and Server releases. Apply the latest security update and monitor MSI activity.

What happened

A flaw in the Windows Installer component (msiexec.exe) permits local attackers to elevate privileges to SYSTEM by manipulating MSI package handling. The vulnerability is triggered when an MSI is processed with crafted data that bypasses integrity checks.

Impact

All Windows 10/11 and Windows Server 2016/2019/2022 systems that have not applied the latest cumulative update are susceptible. An attacker with local access can execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges.

Mitigation

  • Install the latest cumulative security update from Microsoft (KBxxxxxx).
  • Ensure Windows Installer service is running only for trusted packages; consider disabling if not required.
  • Use AppLocker or Software Restriction Policies to block untrusted MSI execution.
  • Monitor for unusual msiexec activity and elevated process creation.

What to do now

Apply the patch immediately, verify installation, and review system logs for signs of exploitation.
