CVE-2026-71337: Windows Storage Management Provider Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability

Microsoft has identified an elevation of privilege flaw in the Windows Storage Management Provider that could allow local attackers to gain higher privileges on affected systems. The issue is addressed in the latest cumulative update for Windows 10, 11, and Windows Server. Defenders should verify that the update is applied and monitor for any anomalous privilege escalation activity.

Microsoft has disclosed CVE-2026-71337, an elevation of privilege vulnerability in the Windows Storage Management Provider. The flaw allows a local attacker with user‑level access to execute privileged actions by manipulating the provider’s handling of storage requests.

What Happened

The vulnerability resides in the Storage Management Provider component of Windows. An attacker can exploit the flaw by triggering a malformed storage operation that bypasses normal privilege checks, enabling the execution of code with SYSTEM rights.

Affected Systems

  • Windows 10 (all builds)
  • Windows 11 (all builds)
  • Windows Server 2019 and 2022

Severity

CVSS v3.1 score: 8.8 (High). The flaw can be leveraged only by local users; remote exploitation requires additional conditions.

Mitigation

  • Apply the latest cumulative update that contains the fix (KBxxxxxx).
  • Verify that the update is installed on all endpoints and servers.
  • If the Storage Management Provider is not required, consider disabling it via Group Policy or disabling the related service.
  • Enforce least privilege for local accounts and restrict access to storage management tools.

Monitoring and Response

  • Watch for unusual privilege escalation events in Windows Event Logs (Event ID 4670, 4672).
  • Use endpoint detection and response (EDR) to flag any attempts to invoke storage provider APIs from non‑privileged processes.
  • Maintain an inventory of systems that have applied the patch and schedule remediation for any gaps.
