CVE-2026-83657: Windows MDM Weak Authentication Enables Local Tampering
A flaw in Windows Modern Device Management (MDM) authentication allows an attacker with local privileges to modify MDM configurations. The vulnerability can be exploited on Windows 10/11 systems that use MDM for device management. Apply the latest security update or disable MDM to mitigate.
What happened
Microsoft identified a weakness in the authentication flow of Windows MDM that permits an attacker who has already authenticated to a device to tamper with MDM settings. The flaw does not require elevated privileges beyond those granted by the attacker’s existing account.
Impact
Systems that rely on MDM for policy enforcement, application deployment, or device configuration can be compromised. An attacker could alter policies, install malicious software, or bypass security controls, potentially affecting all devices managed through the compromised MDM profile.
What to do
- Install the security update that addresses CVE-2026-83657 (available through Windows Update or WSUS).
- Verify that MDM authentication is configured to require multi‑factor or stronger credentials.
- Audit MDM policies for unexpected changes and monitor device logs for anomalous activity.
- Consider disabling MDM on devices that do not require it until a patch is applied.
