FortiAP CLI Command Injection Vulnerability (CWE-78) – CVSS 6.1

Fortinet FortiAP, FortiAP‑U, and FortiAP‑W2 devices are affected by a command‑line interface flaw that allows authenticated privileged users to execute arbitrary OS commands. The vulnerability carries a CVSS v3 score of 6.1 and can be mitigated by applying the latest firmware, restricting CLI access, and monitoring for suspicious activity.

What happened

Fortinet disclosed that the command‑line interface on FortiAP, FortiAP‑U, and FortiAP‑W2 devices contains an OS command injection vulnerability (CWE‑78). An authenticated user with privileged CLI access can craft requests that cause the device to execute arbitrary shell commands.

Impact

Attackers who gain privileged CLI access can run arbitrary commands, potentially compromising the device, exfiltrating configuration data, or pivoting to other network assets. The flaw is not exploitable remotely without initial privileged access, but it elevates the risk for compromised accounts.

What to do

Defenders should immediately apply the latest FortiAP firmware updates that contain the fix. If an update is not yet available, restrict CLI access to trusted administrators, enforce strong authentication, and enable logging of all CLI sessions.

Mitigation Steps

  • Upgrade to the latest firmware version that addresses CVE‑2026‑xxxx (replace with actual CVE if known).
  • Disable or tightly restrict CLI access on all FortiAP devices.
  • Enable audit logging for CLI commands and monitor for anomalous activity.
  • Apply network segmentation to limit the blast radius of a compromised AP.
  • Conduct a review of privileged accounts and enforce least‑privilege principles.
