Windows Overlay Filter RCE Vulnerability (CVE‑2026‑69959) – Immediate Patch Required

Microsoft has disclosed a high‑severity out‑of‑bounds read in the Windows Overlay Filter that allows an authorized user to execute arbitrary code locally. The flaw is fixed in the latest security update; administrators must apply the patch and verify system integrity.

What happened

Microsoft identified an out‑of‑bounds read in the Windows Overlay Filter component that can be exploited by a user with local privileges to run arbitrary code on the affected system.

Impact

The vulnerability is a local code‑execution flaw that can be used to elevate privileges or compromise the system. It affects all Windows 10 and Windows 11 installations that have not applied the latest cumulative update.

What to do

  • Verify that the latest security update (KBxxxxxx) is installed: run wmic qfe get HotFixID or Get‑HotFix in PowerShell.
  • If the update is missing, run Windows Update or download the patch from Microsoft’s Update Catalog.
  • After installation, reboot the system and confirm that the update is applied.
  • Monitor for anomalous processes and review event logs for signs of exploitation.

Mitigation

Apply the patch immediately. No configuration change can fully mitigate the flaw; disabling the Overlay Filter is not supported and may break UI functionality.
