ClickFix Attacks Exploit ClickOnce: How CrowdStrike Falcon Defends Browsers and Endpoints

ClickFix attackers force users to run malicious commands via ClickOnce, compromising browsers and endpoints. CrowdStrike’s Falcon Seraphic Enterprise Browser and platform detect and block these actions, protecting identity and SOC processes. Defenders should enable Falcon’s browser extension, update endpoint agents, and monitor for suspicious command execution.

What Happened

Attackers use the ClickOnce deployment feature to trick users into executing a malicious command line that installs malware on the local machine. The technique, called ClickFix, relies on a crafted .application file that, when opened, runs a payload that can bypass standard browser sandboxing.

Impact

When successful, the payload can install persistence mechanisms, exfiltrate credentials, and provide a foothold for further lateral movement. Systems with older or misconfigured ClickOnce settings are most vulnerable, and the compromise can spread to endpoints, identity services, and SOC tooling.

Mitigation Steps

  • Disable or restrict ClickOnce deployment in group policy or by removing the .application handler from the browser.
  • Ensure Falcon endpoint agents are at the latest version and that the Falcon Seraphic Enterprise Browser extension is installed on all corporate browsers.
  • Configure Falcon to block execution of unknown command‑line arguments and to alert on attempts to launch PowerShell or cmd.exe from untrusted sources.
  • Implement continuous monitoring of process creation events and correlate with Falcon’s threat intelligence feeds.

How Falcon Helps

Falcon’s browser extension inspects the payload before it reaches the system, detecting the malicious command signature. The Falcon platform correlates the event with known ClickFix indicators, triggers an automated response, and logs the activity for SOC analysts. Endpoint agents enforce execution policies, preventing the payload from completing installation.

Falcon’s real‑time detection stops ClickFix before it can install.
