CVE-2026-102850: Microsoft Office Access Remote Code Execution via Heap Overflow

A heap‑based buffer overflow in Microsoft Office Access (CVE‑2026‑102850) allows an unauthenticated attacker to execute code over a network. The flaw can be triggered by a crafted Access file. Defenders should apply the latest Office updates immediately and consider disabling Access on untrusted networks.

What Happened

A heap‑based buffer overflow exists in Microsoft Office Access that can be exploited remotely. An attacker can send a specially crafted Access file to a vulnerable system and trigger the overflow, leading to arbitrary code execution.

Impact

Unauthenticated remote code execution on any machine running a vulnerable version of Office Access. The attacker can gain full control of the target system, install malware, exfiltrate data, or pivot within the network.

Mitigation

  • Apply the latest Office security update that addresses CVE‑2026‑102850.
  • Restrict or disable Access on machines that do not require it, especially those exposed to untrusted networks.
  • Implement network segmentation to limit the reach of potential exploitation.
  • Use application whitelisting to block execution of unknown or unsigned Access files.

Monitoring & Response

Enable logging for Access file access and monitor for anomalous network activity or repeated attempts to open Access files from unknown sources. Investigate any successful exploitation attempts and isolate affected systems promptly.
