CVE-2026-68847: Privilege Escalation via Connected User Experiences and Telemetry
Microsoft has acknowledged a CVE-2026-68847 vulnerability in the Connected User Experiences and Telemetry component that could allow local privilege escalation. No patch is available yet; defenders should disable telemetry services, apply the latest Windows updates when released, and monitor for anomalous process activity.
A recent Microsoft advisory identified CVE-2026-68847 as an elevation of privilege flaw within the Connected User Experiences and Telemetry (CUE/T) subsystem. The flaw allows a local attacker to execute code with higher privileges by manipulating telemetry data handling routines.
Impact
Systems running Windows 10 or Windows 11 with the default CUE/T service enabled are potentially vulnerable. Successful exploitation could grant an attacker SYSTEM-level access, enabling full control over the affected machine.
Mitigation Steps
- Disable the Connected User Experiences and Telemetry service (WdiServiceHost) via Group Policy or registry.
- Apply the latest cumulative updates for Windows 10/11 as soon as Microsoft releases a fix.
- Enable AppLocker or Software Restriction Policies to block unauthorized telemetry executables.
- Monitor event logs for unexpected telemetry-related process creation or privilege escalation events.
What to Do Next
Stay updated on Microsoft’s security bulletin for CVE-2026-68847. Until a patch is available, treat affected systems as high-risk and enforce strict least-privilege access controls.
