CVE-2026-83826: Windows Error Reporting Privilege Escalation Vulnerability

A local privilege escalation flaw in Windows Error Reporting allows an authenticated user to gain elevated rights by dereferencing an untrusted pointer. The issue affects all Windows 10/11 installations that have Error Reporting enabled. Apply the latest security update or disable the service to mitigate.

What happened

An untrusted pointer dereference in the Windows Error Reporting component can be triggered by a local user to elevate privileges. The flaw exists in the way the component processes error data, allowing an attacker to execute code with SYSTEM rights.

Impact

Any user with local access can exploit the flaw to gain SYSTEM privileges, enabling full control over the affected machine. The vulnerability is limited to local attacks and requires the user to have permission to trigger error reporting.

What to do

  • Apply the latest Microsoft security update (KBxxxxxx) released on 2026-10-10.
  • If patching is delayed, disable the WerSvc service or set the registry key HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting to 0.
  • Enable auditing for privilege escalation and monitor for suspicious activity.
