CVE-2026-69363: Windows Error Reporting Heap Overflow Enables Remote Privilege Escalation

A heap-based buffer overflow in Windows Error Reporting allows an authorized attacker to gain elevated privileges over a network. The flaw can be triggered by sending a crafted error report, enabling remote privilege escalation. Microsoft has issued a patch; administrators should apply updates and consider disabling or restricting Error Reporting.

What happened

A heap-based buffer overflow exists in the Windows Error Reporting component. An attacker who can send a specially crafted error report to a target system can trigger the overflow, causing the process to execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges.

Impact

Once exploited, the attacker can gain local administrator rights on the affected machine, potentially compromising the entire network if the system is part of a domain or shares resources.

Mitigation

  • Install the latest cumulative update that addresses CVE‑2026‑69363.
  • If immediate patching is not possible, disable the Windows Error Reporting service or block inbound traffic to the Error Reporting endpoints.
  • Apply least‑privilege network segmentation to limit the reach of compromised hosts.

Verification

Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC) lists CVE‑2026‑69363 as a heap‑based buffer overflow that allows remote privilege escalation via Windows Error Reporting.

Run the Windows Update Agent to confirm the patch is installed. Use sysinternals Process Monitor to watch for the “werfault.exe” process being invoked by untrusted sources.
