Vulnerabilities
CVE-2026-83748: Windows Error Reporting Remote Code Execution via Heap Overflow
A heap-based buffer overflow in Windows Error Reporting enables remote code execution by unauthenticated attackers. The flaw can be exploited over a network, allowing arbitrary code execution on affected systems. Apply the latest Microsoft security update or disable the Error Reporting service to mitigate the risk.
What happened
A heap-based buffer overflow in the Windows Error Reporting component allows an unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary code on a target system via a specially crafted network request.
Impact
Any Windows machine with the vulnerable Error Reporting service enabled can be compromised, potentially leading to full system takeover. The flaw does not require user interaction and can be triggered remotely.
Mitigation
- Install the latest Microsoft security update that addresses CVE‑2026‑83748.
- As an interim measure, disable the Windows Error Reporting service (wermgr) via Group Policy or local policy.
- Block inbound traffic to the Error Reporting port (default 443/HTTPS) if the service is not needed.
Recommended actions
- Verify that the update is deployed across all endpoints.
- Monitor for anomalous network traffic or unexpected process creation associated with wermgr.
- Document the change in your configuration management database.
