Malwarebytes Updates Browser Guard with Pre-Click Search Reputation and On-Page Scam Analysis
Malwarebytes has released new updates to its Browser Guard extension, introducing Search Reputation ratings for major search engines and Scam Guard Lite for on-page threat analysis in Google Chrome. These additions aim to assist users and defenders in identifying malicious links and fraudulent pages prior to interaction.
What happened
Malwarebytes has rolled out two new security features for its Browser Guard extension: Search Reputation and Scam Guard Lite. These capabilities are designed to evaluate web pages during the pre-click discovery phase and analyze active page content once a user has navigated to a site.
How it works
The Search Reputation feature integrates directly into supported search engines—including Google, DuckDuckGo, Brave, and Bing—to display visual indicators next to search results. A green rating denotes a trusted domain according to Malwarebytes telemetry, while a red rating flags known malicious infrastructure. For active browsing sessions, Scam Guard Lite operates within the Google Chrome extension to evaluate the DOM and page contents for indicators of social engineering or fraud without requiring URL extraction.
What to do
- Ensure endpoint extensions are updated to the latest version of Malwarebytes Browser Guard.
- Verify that Google Chrome users have access to the extension interface to utilize Scam Guard Lite when inspecting suspicious pages.
- Remind staff that a green search reputation rating does not guarantee absolute safety against zero-hour domains or highly targeted phishing campaigns.
