Microsoft Edge Patch for CVE‑2026‑95349: WebGL Buffer Overflow

A buffer overflow in WebGL was identified in Chromium, impacting all Chromium‑based browsers including Microsoft Edge. Microsoft has fixed the issue in the latest Edge release. Defenders should update Edge, verify the patch, and monitor for exploitation attempts.

What happened

Chromium’s WebGL implementation suffered a buffer overflow that could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code in the context of a user’s browser session. The flaw was assigned CVE‑2026‑95349 by Google and subsequently addressed in the Chromium codebase.

Impact

Any user running a Chromium‑based browser that had not applied the latest security update was potentially vulnerable. Successful exploitation could lead to remote code execution, privilege escalation within the browser, and compromise of the underlying operating system if the browser process is elevated.

Mitigation

Microsoft Edge automatically incorporates the Chromium fix. Updating to the most recent Edge release (currently version 130.x or newer) resolves the vulnerability. Edge users should verify that their browser reports the latest version in the settings menu.

Next steps for defenders

  • Ensure all Edge installations are updated to the latest version.
  • Validate the update by checking the browser’s version number.
  • Monitor web traffic and system logs for anomalous WebGL activity or exploitation attempts.
  • Apply the same update policy to other Chromium‑based browsers in the environment.
