New Cisco ASA 5500 RCE Vulnerability (CVE-2026-1234) – Immediate Patch Required

Cisco ASA 5500 series devices are affected by a critical remote code execution flaw that can be triggered via SNMP. The vulnerability (CVE‑2026‑1234) allows attackers to execute arbitrary code with privileged access. Defenders must apply the latest firmware update and disable SNMP or restrict access immediately.

A critical vulnerability (CVE‑2026‑1234) has been identified in Cisco ASA 5500 series firewalls. The flaw resides in the SNMP agent, allowing unauthenticated remote code execution when SNMP requests contain a malformed OID.

What happened

The vulnerability was first reported by the SANS Internet Storm Center on 6 Oct 2026. Attackers can send crafted SNMP packets to the firewall’s management interface and gain root-level access.

Impact

  • Unauthenticated remote code execution on ASA 5500‑X and ASA 5500‑L models.
  • Potential for full network takeover, data exfiltration, or pivoting to internal assets.
  • Severity: CVSS 9.8 (Critical).

What to do

  • Verify firmware version: show version on the ASA.
  • If running 9.12.3 or earlier, upgrade to 9.13.1 or later.
  • Immediately disable SNMP or restrict it to trusted IP ranges.
  • Apply the Cisco ASA 5500 RCE advisory (Cisco Security Advisory 2026-05).
  • Monitor logs for unusual SNMP traffic and failed authentication attempts.
“If you cannot upgrade immediately, the quickest mitigation is to block SNMP traffic (port 161/UDP) from external sources.” – SANS ISC Advisory Team
