CVE-2026-62874: Azure Billing Privilege Escalation Vulnerability

A flaw in Azure Billing data validation allows attackers to gain elevated privileges within an Azure subscription. The issue can be exploited without authentication, potentially giving attackers full control over billing and resource management. Defenders should apply the latest Azure updates, restrict billing API access, and monitor for anomalous billing activity.

What Happened

Microsoft identified a flaw (CVE-2026-62874) in Azure Billing where insufficient data authenticity checks enable an unauthenticated attacker to elevate privileges. The vulnerability affects the Azure Billing API and related services across all subscription tiers.

Impact

Once exploited, an attacker can modify billing settings, create or delete resources, and potentially gain broader access to the subscription. This can lead to unauthorized charges, data exfiltration, and compromise of the entire Azure environment.

Mitigation

  • Apply the latest Azure updates and security patches as released by Microsoft.
  • Restrict access to billing APIs by using network security groups and service endpoints.
  • Enforce multi‑factor authentication for all accounts with billing permissions.
  • Review and tighten role‑based access control (RBAC) to limit billing‑related roles.

Monitoring & Detection

Enable Azure Activity Log alerts for billing‑related operations and monitor for unexpected changes in cost management data. Correlate logs with Azure Sentinel or other SIEM solutions to detect anomalous activity early.
