CVE-2026-69639: Windows libarchive Heap Overflow Enables Remote Code Execution

A heap-based buffer overflow in Windows Libarchive (CVE‑2026‑69639) permits unauthenticated network attackers to execute arbitrary code. The flaw affects all Windows systems that use the vulnerable libarchive component. Apply the latest Microsoft security update immediately and verify the component version.

What happened

A heap-based buffer overflow exists in the Windows Libarchive component (CVE‑2026‑69639). The flaw can be triggered by a crafted archive file received over the network, allowing an unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the Libarchive process.

Impact

All Windows systems that incorporate the vulnerable libarchive library are at risk. Successful exploitation results in full remote code execution, potentially compromising the entire host.

Mitigation

Apply the Microsoft security update released on 2026‑10‑12 that patches the vulnerable component. Verify that the libarchive version is 2.8.0 or newer. If the update cannot be applied immediately, restrict network access to the affected services and monitor for anomalous archive processing.

Additional Recommendations

  • Run the latest Windows Security Baseline configuration to enforce least privilege for services using libarchive.
  • Enable Windows Defender Exploit Guard and set the “Block all file types” policy for untrusted archive formats.
  • Implement network segmentation to isolate systems that process external archives.
