CVE-2026-83583: Local Privilege Escalation via Windows Geotag Broker

A local privilege escalation flaw in the Windows Geotag Broker service allows an attacker with user-level access to gain elevated rights. The vulnerability is mitigated by installing the latest Windows update and disabling the Geotag Broker if not needed.

A flaw in the Windows Geotag Broker service has been identified that permits an attacker with local user privileges to elevate their access level. The vulnerability stems from improper access control checks within the broker’s implementation, enabling the attacker to execute privileged operations.

Affected Systems

All Windows operating systems that include the Geotag Broker component, including Windows 10, 11, and Server 2022, are potentially impacted. The issue is present in all builds prior to the latest cumulative update released by Microsoft.

Impact

Once exploited, an attacker can gain administrative privileges on the affected machine, allowing full control over system configuration, data, and other users. This can facilitate further lateral movement or persistence within the network.

Mitigation Steps

  • Install the latest cumulative update for your Windows version (check Microsoft Security Response Center for the specific update package).
  • Verify that the Geotag Broker service is running only on systems that require geotag functionality; otherwise, disable the service via Services.msc or group policy.
  • Apply the principle of least privilege to user accounts, ensuring that users do not have unnecessary local administrative rights.
  • Monitor for unusual privilege escalation activity using event logs (Event ID 4670, 4672) and endpoint detection tools.
