CVE-2026-83694: Windows Volume Manager Extension Driver Local Privilege Escalation

Microsoft has disclosed a local privilege escalation vulnerability in the Windows Volume Manager Extension Driver (CVE‑2026‑83694). An authenticated attacker can trigger an out‑of‑bounds read, allowing elevation of privileges on the affected system. Defenders should apply the latest security updates and verify driver integrity.

What happened

Microsoft identified an out‑of‑bounds read in the Windows Volume Manager Extension Driver that can be exploited by an authenticated local user to elevate privileges.

Affected systems

All Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016/2019/2022 installations that include the default Volume Manager Extension Driver are vulnerable until the latest cumulative update is applied.

Impact

The flaw allows a local attacker to read memory beyond the intended buffer, potentially enabling arbitrary code execution or privilege escalation to SYSTEM.

Mitigation

Apply the latest security update from Microsoft (KBxxxxxx) and verify that the driver is signed and not tampered with. As a temporary measure, restrict local administrator rights and monitor for anomalous driver activity.
