CVE-2026-83753: Windows Camera Frame Server Monitor Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability

A heap-based buffer overflow in the Windows Camera Frame Server Monitor allows an authenticated local user to elevate privileges to SYSTEM. The flaw affects Windows 10 and 11 and can be mitigated by installing the latest cumulative update and tightening camera service permissions.

What happened

A heap-based buffer overflow in the Windows Camera Frame Server Monitor component allows an authorized local attacker to trigger a privilege escalation. The vulnerability is triggered by malformed camera frame data processed by the monitor service.

Impact

Systems running Windows 10 or Windows 11 with the Camera Frame Server Monitor enabled are vulnerable. Successful exploitation can lead to elevation of privileges to SYSTEM level, enabling the attacker to modify system settings, install malware, or compromise other users.

Mitigation

  • Install the latest cumulative update that includes the fix for CVE-2026-83753.
  • Verify that the Camera Frame Server Monitor service is running only under the least privileged account.
  • Apply group policy to restrict local user access to camera devices if not required.
  • Monitor event logs for anomalous activity from the Camera Frame Server Monitor process.
Microsoft has released a patch for CVE-2026-83753 in the latest Windows 10/11 cumulative update.

What to do now

Check the update status of all Windows 10 and 11 endpoints. If the update is pending, deploy it immediately. If the service is disabled or not needed, consider disabling it via group policy or local configuration.
