Elastic Launches Detonate: Automated Malware Testing for Elastic Security
Elastic released Detonate, a sandboxed platform that lets security teams run malware samples against their Elastic Security stack with minimal effort. The system automates VM provisioning, execution monitoring, and telemetry collection, enabling rapid validation of protection efficacy.
What Happened
Elastic built Detonate to automate the testing of its Elastic Security solution against real malware. The platform provisions virtual machines, runs samples, and aggregates telemetry, allowing researchers to validate protection mechanisms at scale.
How It Works
Detonate accepts a SHA256 hash, prepares the file, provisions a sandboxed VM with limited external connectivity, executes the sample, and waits for completion or timeout. Once finished, it stops the VM, cleans the environment, and generates an event summary from the collected alerts and telemetry.
Impact on Defenders
Security teams using Elastic Security can now quickly verify that their detection rules and behavioral analytics trigger against known threats. The automated workflow reduces manual effort, speeds up validation cycles, and provides a research resource for future improvements.
What to Do
- Integrate Detonate into your continuous security testing pipeline.
- Use the generated event summaries to fine‑tune detection rules and response playbooks.
- Share findings with the Elastic community to help improve overall protection.
