Windows Media Elevation of Privilege via Heap Buffer Overflow (CVE-2026-83641)

A heap‑based buffer overflow in Windows Media allows a local user with sufficient privileges to gain SYSTEM rights. The flaw is present in all Windows 10/11 and Server 2022 builds that include Windows Media. Apply the Microsoft security update or disable Windows Media to mitigate.

What happened

A heap‑based buffer overflow in the Windows Media component can be triggered by a crafted media file. When processed, the overflow corrupts the heap and allows the attacker to execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges.

Impact

Local users who can run Windows Media can elevate to SYSTEM, enabling full control over the affected machine. The vulnerability is not exploitable remotely and requires local access.

Mitigation

  • Install the latest Microsoft security update that patches CVE‑2026‑83641.
  • If patching is not immediately possible, disable Windows Media by removing the Windows Media Player feature or setting the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\App Paths\\wmplayer.exe to an empty string.
  • Apply least‑privilege principles: restrict local user rights and monitor for anomalous privilege escalation.

Additional Recommendations

Regularly review installed Windows features and remove unused media components. Keep the system updated with the latest cumulative updates to reduce the attack surface.
